The Cathay Closes

Announced is the closure of Cathay Cineplex at their Handy Road location, with the last day of operation on "June 26th".

"Media company mm2 Asia, which runs the Cathay Cineplexes chain in Singapore, said in a separate statement earlier on Friday that the closure is "part of the cost rationalisation for its cinema operations"," as reported on sg.style.yahoo.com.

Independent cinema The Projector is scheduled to take over the space from August 23rd to operate a "pop-up", which will "showcase films, live performances, and a cocktail and craft beer bar," bring a slice of their celluloid-life from Golden Mile Tower (theprojector.sg), and expanding their "PROJECTOR X" ventures beyond "Project X: Riverside" currently at Riverside Point.

My memories of the old Cathay is still vivid some days... Back when they had Orange Julius at the front(side), and a row of shop-houses along the road leading to Parklane.

...Back when they had a kacang-puteh stall at the side entrance too ... But I can't for the life of me remember what movies I'd watch there tho... The PLACE was more important to me that what I'd watched there and when...but this current incarnation is so far removed from said memories of those days, it'll be only worth a SHARE.
